a BIT is the smallest possible piece of data. it corresponds to one of the two possible electrical states, one (1) or zero (0). this is basically under voltage (1) or no voltage (0).
a BYTE is eight single (8) bits together and that makes one character in the computer world.
so, for example, 1 byte = 8 bits whereas 28kB = 28,000 bytes = 224,000 bits.
