Originally, LASIK was performed with the first step using a disposable razor blade to cut a thin layer of tissue on the front of the eye to make a flap which is folded back to allow the second step or excimer laser to treat the front of the eye.
The newer method of LASIK is called blade free because a second laser, a femtosecond laser is used to make the "flap" instead of a razor blade. The original laser for doing this procedure is made by a company called Intralase that was recently purchased by another eye company, AMO. More recently other companies offer femtosecond lasers with the most advanced model being offered by Carl Zeiss, the VisuMax. Another company making a product is called Femtec.
Overall it is somewhat surprising that still over half of all LASIK procedures are performed with the older "blade" method with the availability of the safer and more predictable blade free approach.
