In high voltage Transformers, if a turn to turn fault develops, this will result in a rapid rise in pressure inside the transformer tank due to localized heating. A Bucholz relay is designed to sense this rapid change in pressure, and can be used to alarm or trip the transformer off line.
These are also used on large reactors. Since these are a mechanical device, they can be sensitive to vibrations, so they may not be enabled for tripping in locations very near train tracks or fault lines.
