It depends. If it is a plant it is the energy that powers photosynthesis, but if it is a human they get burnt and get skin cancer

foods containing glucose (sugars) provide the energy, along with oxygen, for respiration, which gives energy to all living things
Non living things such as a rotting peice of wood can be good for grubs and such. Or trees that are dead but hollowed out can provide shelter for groundcreatures.
