Calf Muscles is called as the peripheral heart as its action pumps the deoxygenated blood back to the heart against the gravity. it is composed of soleus, medial and lateral gastrocnemius muscles situated in the posterior part below the knee or the upper leg.
soleus muscle. it is multipennate, fleshy muscle.
this muscle lies in the superficial compartment of the leg.
this muscle forms a part of tendo calcaneus tendon.
perforating veins from superficial long saphenous vein enter the substance of soleus and communicate with rich plexus of small valveless veins within the muscle, called soleal sinuses(soleal venous plexus).
the soleal sinuses communicate with the deep veins of the lower limb. when soleus muscle contracts the blood is pumped out of this plexus into deep veins aiding in venous return from the lower limb, hence the name "peripheral heart.
soleus is supplied by the tibial nerve L4,5 S1,2.
