∙ 14y agoWhen the moon grows fuller it is waxing. When it grows smaller it is waning. The moon follows this pattern: 1st quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, 3rd quarter, waning crescent, new moon, waxing crescent, and back to 1st quarter.

If on the left side of the moon, and getting smaller, it is waning.
So, waxing is towards a full moon, while waning is towards a new moon.
