Card catalogues were originally created to provide access points to materials found within a library collection. This was the method used prior to the usage of computerized cataloguing systems.

The main purpose of card catalogues, as with modern computer-based catalogues, were to allow for a person to:

1. Find a book according to: (a) author (b) title (c) subject, or (d) category

2. See what the library has in it's collection by a specific: (a) author (b) subject, or (c) type of literature

3. Find and select a book in terms of: (a) edition, or (b) character (i.e. literary or topical)

Cataloguing consists of the usage of different types of cards, which may include the following:

Author catalogue: where books in the collection are sorted according to the name(s) of the author(s) or editor(s).

Title catalogue: where books in the collection are sorted alphabetically according to their title.

Dictionary catalogue: where the authors, titles, and subjects of books are interfiled, in alphabetical order.

Keyword catalogue: where subject keywords are used, arranged in alphabetical order

Systematic (or classified) catalogue: where books are sorted according to a systematic arrangement of the catalogue descriptions.

Mixed alphabetic catalogue: where two or more catalogue types are intertwined. For example: combination of author and title, or combination of author, title, and keyword.

Shelf list catalogue: where author, title, and subject cards are combined in order to provide a complete inventory of a library's collection. It may be organized according to the location of the books. A shelf list may not be accessible to library users.
