Carlisle was born in the 1640's as the only son of Anglican pastor, his mother died while having him. When his father died, his father put him in charge of the raids, hunting vampires, to Carlisle's utter disappointment. But carlisle was smarter than his dad and found a coven of vampires under the city.
him and his group waited for them to come out at night. When they did, they started to kill them, and one got ahold of carlisle, but didnt kill him completely and left him in the road to die. Carlisle did not die though.
He knew what he was becoming and endured all of the pain without anyones help. He stayed in small places while he was making the transformation away from people. he did not kill anyone during that time.
after he became a full vampire, he decided not to kill humans, but to kill animals. He went to school and became a doctor. the very first person he made a vampire was Edward Cullen who was in the hospital bed in front of him about to die. carlisle turned him. so from then on he turned Esme and then rosalie, and emmet. He did not however turn Alice or jasper.
He believes that he should only turn someone if they are on the verge of dieing.
