I think you're talking about the Central Processing Unit, which is the main piece of hardware in a computer. It is basically the 'brain' of the computer where all the sorting, searching, decision-making and calculating takes place. Also, how good the CPU works is measured by its speed (in MHz or GHz). Each CPU contains a tiny clock, where each 'tick' corresponds to a instruction per second. The CPU in a typical computer today runs at around 3GHz.
