A chafer, or chafing dish, is used to keep food warm during banquet type events. The main compartment sits on a stand with candles lit underneath. Inside the main compartment there is water that is being heated from beneath. You then place your food dishes (which are in metals pans) on top of the heated water so that your food stays warm through the entire event.
