Best Answer

An early line printer that used type slugs linked together in a chain as its printing mechanism. The chain spins horizontally around a set of hammers. When the desired character is in front of the selected print column, the corresponding hammer hits the paper into the ribbon and onto the character in the chain.

Printer forms characters and graphics on a piece of paper by striking a mechanism against an inked ribbon that physically contacts the paper.?

Several types of printers used an ink or carbon ribbon in the way you described. The daisy wheel printer and ball printer would spin a wheel that has the printable characters, then the wheel would strike the ribbon, leaving an imprint on the paper. The dot matrix printer used a number of pins that struck the ribbon to generate a printable character. The chain printer had several full sets of all printable characters on a long chain, and the chain spun rapidly on a track. As the appropriate printable character arrived at the proper location, a high speed solenoid driven hammer struck the chain, causing the ribbon to leave an imprint on the paper.

Is a laser printer a kind of line printer?

No.A line printer uses characters.A laser printer uses pixels.More informationA laser printer uses a revolving charged glass cylinder. The laser can discharge the glass at points where no ink is wanted, causing the no toner to stick onto the surface of the cylinder at those points. Then the paper is pressed against the cylinder as it revolves, transferring the toner from the cylinder to the paper. The paper is then passed over a heater to melt and fuse the toner to the paper.A line printer is also known as a chain printer where the entire character font set is built up in metal type, with one character mounted on each link of the chain. The faces of the metal characters are wetted by moving across an ink pad. Each character position on the line has a hammer. When the right character is in the proper position, the hammer fires and then the paper gets pressed against the inked typeface to get an imprint.
