Best Answer

If a particle interacts with matter in a semiconductor and produces one or more charged reaction product(s), those products will go on to ionise other atoms in the semiconductor; along the particle tracks they "sweep-out" electron-hole pairs. By placing a suitable bias across the p- and n- type layers the electrons can then be collected and a current detected.
