Many rocks contain included salts, and when these are re-mobilized into solution and then re-crystallize, the increased local volume of the salt crystal will disrupt the rock. This process is sometimes the cause of cavities forming under an overhanging rock face.

Similarly, the rock minerals may be dissolved by rain water, to form clays, which will also have a different volume and shape to the parent mineral, and thus disrupt that rock.

And of course, in our modern industrial atmosphere, there are many corrosive substances that enhance weathering, SO3 ions for example.
