RCDs' (Residual Current Device) protects by monitoring the flow of electricity through the phase (live) and neutral wire. If it detects an imbalance it will cut off the power supply to that circuit.
Fuses, and more commonly, circuit breakers, prevent too much electricity being drawn by the circuit. If the current drawn by the circuit is too much either the fuse will "blow" or the circuit breaker will trip and it will disconnect the power supply to that circuit.
