Best Answer

Cold rolling is simply crushing the steel into thin plates (done using large rollers) when the steel is at a low temperature. Cold rolled, grain oriented (CRGO) silicon steel is often used in transformer cores. When Steel is heated (annealing), the silicon - iron crystals become aligned. Cold rolling crushes the crystals into random positions. This helps minimize stray losses in Transformers, making them more efficient.

A non-electrical application of cold rolling is in the making of samurai swords.
