It is the process of conversion of generated ac voltage into the armature of a dc generator to dc voltage at the terminal of the dc generator by use of pair of brushes and commutator.
OR It is the process of conversion of given dc voltage at the terminal of the dc motor to ac voltage in the armature windings in a dc motor by use of pair of brushes and commutator.
it does so...as because of commutation process. bcoz......in dc current we cant avoid sparking and hence it uses ac supply.... so that i changes its direction in up nd down motion just like a sine wave..so commutation procees occurs..and it avoids sparking.......... hence ac is preferd
Carbon brushes used in DC machines because carbon is soft material and it does not generate spikes when contact with commutator
it is the natural commutation ...by making open circuit or short circuit on the thyristor to make it turn off.
Based on the electric supply electric machines are classified in to two types namely AC and DC machines. These are further classified in to different ones.
generators are machines that convert machanical energy to electrical energy and could be AC or DC. if in a DC generator has it field armature connection in both series and parallel its said to be compound dc generator.
1.resistance commutation 2.e.m.f commutation
chopper transforms ac to dc (dc chopper) while all inverter transform dc to ac commutation used in chopper: forced, load commutation used in inverter:forced(180 vsi),natural or line(120 vsi)
Copper carbon decides the distribution of commutation from the rotation. It tells what direction for it flow.
In voltage commutation process, the introduction of interpoles between main poles compensate armature mmf and reduces the effect of armature reaction.
Voltage commutation: This is possible in ac circuits...The thyristor gets turned off by reverse bias (negative half cycle) voltage applied across it. This is also called line commutation. Current Commutation: This is possible in dc circuits ...This type of commutation makes use of auxiliary circuit which contains inductor, capacitor, diode and even a thyristor(auxiliary). This is called Forced commutation.
Francisco A. Guillen has written: 'DC-side single commutation inverter'
connects the brushes to obtain a good commutation. its also a line joining two points at which no emf is induced.
Friction and windage causes mechanical loss in DC machines.
Two types of commutation process 1) Natural commutation 2) Forced commutation
All DC machines are works based on the principle of FARADAY'S LAW OF ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUCTION.

Generally there are two methods of improving Commutation :- 1.Resistance Commutation 2.Emf or Voltage Commutation The Commutation can also be improve by using interpoles and compensating windings.
