The briefcase was designed for use by folks with a desktop and portable computer.
The way it works is; put all the files you want to have on both systems in the briefcase on one of the computers, then have the other computer sync its briefcase and all the files will be copied. There are several options like making sure only the newest version is sync'ed. For example if you have a document you edit on the laptop and the same document is on the desktop computer, then you can tell it to check the date and make sure the new version goes back to the desktop.
Not too many people use this any more (as far as I know) since most of the time people forget to do the sync, but it can be set to do it automatically. You need to make sure both computers are on the same network, or there are several types of cables you can use if you don't have a network (go to a good electronics shop and ask).
