Best Answer

The conjunctivae (the mucous membranes that line the inner surface of the eyelid and the exposed surface of the eyeball) are normally a healthy red colour. In anaemia (haemaglobin < 90g/L), these tissues become unnaturally pale. Pallor of the conjunctivae is therefore a sign of anaemia used in clinical examination. There is, however, some debate over the reliability of this sign (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9051559) as it is not particularly sensitive.
