The word covenant appears in Matthew here:
Mat 26:28 For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
A covenant is an agreement/a promise/an undertaking. In the Old Testament times God made a covenant with the nation of Israel. He would be their God and they would be His people. But Israel failed to keep their part of the covenant, they were supposed to be a light to all the other nations to show God's ways.
So God has made a new covenant, it is sealed with the blood of Jesus, it is to all who believe that Jesus is the son of God and that he died as a sacrifice for sin.
Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Joh 3:17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
If you believe this then you will be saved from the judgment that all people will face - that is God's promise.

St. Matthew the Evangelist's feast day prayer is "O Glorious Saint Matthew, in your Gospel you portray Jesus as the longed-for Messiah who fulfilled the Prophets of the Old Covenant. Help us to see Jesus in His New Covenant and follow His teachings with zeal and love. Amen."
Jesus did not have a blood relation to Matthew. They were both Jewish, that's it.
Matthew gives the geology of Jesus christ in the beginning.
St. Matthew turned to Jesus because he was called by Jesus to follow him. Matthew, also known as Levi, was a tax collector before encountering Jesus. When Jesus called him, Matthew immediately left his profession and followed Him, acknowledging Jesus' authority and responding to His invitation to discipleship.
