A data warehouse system is just a database that provides a single-point of access to multiple ERP systems (ERP = software systems used by companies). The different ERP will be interfaced to the data warehouse so that the data can be stored and shared by multiple ERP in a single point.

From a software architecture and a business point of view, it's more convenient to centralize data in one point instead of having this data spread on tens of different software systems.

Typically a data warehouse will centralize a given kind of business data in one storage point to make it easier for management / other systems to process and access this data.
