A denomination is a specific sect within a world religion and can be implied to most world religions since most world religions are divided within themselves. For example in Christianity a denomination could be Catholics, Baptists, Lutherans, Orthodox, etc. Another example is in Islam, a denomination, or sect, could be Sunni Muslims or Shi'ite Muslims. Denominations still believe in the fundamnetals of the world religion they are associated with (i.e. All Christians, Catholics, Orthodox, Baptists etc. included, believe in God and all Muslims believe in Allah), but interpretations of Scripture and differences in doctrine are what separate denominations. The way I was taught and understand the definition of a denomination relates specifically to the Christian Protestant churches. For example, a group of six adult couples that are all very good friends share the beliefs associated to Christians as a whole. However, this same group has grown up practicing their beliefs different than one another, usually depending on what their families showed them and where they went to church. So, out of the six couples three of them go to a Methodist Church, one to a Church of Christ, one to a Lutheran, and another a Southern Baptist church. Each of these different Denominations are all still considered a part of the Christian Protestant community they just have various traditions or ways of practicing their beliefs, which created the separation called a denomination.
So, based on your question, the denomination term cannot really even been compared or associated with "a world religion" if used properly.
