While Desmond Tutu was a member and the first black head of the Anglican church, some would argue that his most important work was done against the apartheid in South Africa. Much like the segregation that blacks in the United States experienced that led to the Civil Rights movement in the 1960's, apartheid was the blatant segregation of black Africans in South Africa.
Charles S. Desmond was born in 1896.
