If a material lacks magnetic moment and let's say it doesn't show any interest in the magnetic field which it's exposed to, then we call it a diamagnetic material. In diamagnetic materials the orbiting shells are filled and all electrons are paired. Diamagnetic materials have negative susceptibility.

Materials either have a magnetic susceptibility dominated by diamagnetic effects or paramagnetic effects. Magnetism arises from the electrons possessing angular momentum (both orbital and spin). When considering indiviual atoms, the concept of shells of electrons is very useful. The properties of an atom's electrons are parameterised by certain numbers called quantum numbers. Electrons with the same prinicipal quantum number, n, are said to be in the same shell. Electrons with the same orbital angular momentum number are said to be in the same sub-shell. Different elements have different numbers of electrons in each shell. Elements with lots of full sub-shells tend to be diamagnetic whlist elements with partially filled sub-shells tend to be paramagentic.
