Punjabi has two forms of writing. Firstly, ਪੰਜਾਬੀ (Gurmukhi) which was standardised by the second Sikh guru, Guru Angad, in the 16th century. Current Sikh guru, Guru Granth Sahib is writen in this script. The Punjabi term Gurmukhi means "from the mouth of the Guru". Parrallel to Gurmukhi is پنجابی (Shahmukhi) which is predominantly used in west Punjab. The Punjabi term Shahmukhi literally means "from the King's mouth". This script has been used by many Sufi poets.
