Lexapro is a cleaned up version of Citalopram (The molecules). Both of the drugs are SSRI. The Citalopram has more side effects and can not be as effective in solving depression. Additionally Lexpro has been found to help anxiety while the Citalopram has not been tested for it. The meds have different effects on different people. The Citalopram (name brand is called Celexa) is the generic brand.

Citalopram is an anti-depressant. It is not habit-forming and it actually treats your depression by changing the brain chemistry so that you feel better honestly.
