lab solvent (or just "solvent"), is a very vague term. anything that is acting as the solvent in a particular mixture could be this "lab solvent".
ethanol on the other hand is a specific example of a compound that is liquid at standard temperature and pressure. because it is a liquid, it can be used as a solvent. again - it would depend on what other compounds are involved (solutes).
