∙ 14y agoWhen a program creates a dialog box, such as a warning, a password prompt, or even the "Do you want to save before closing?" question, modality is used to set the "importance" of the dialog box, in a way.
When a dialog is nonmodal (modeless), you can continue working in the application's main window without interruption, and interact with the dialog box whenever you would like. The program can continue without it. These are prompts like the name you want to use on a document - you don't need to have the name selected to edit the document, so you can move the dialog out of the way to continue working.
However, with a modal dialog box, the rest of the program cannot be used or accessed until the modal dialog box is somehow removed, i.e., by clicking OK. These are prompts such as "Save before quitting?" - the program will not close, nor can you interact with it, until you press "yes", "no", or "cancel".
