Origins of Luke's GospelFirst, it is necessary to explain that Mark's Gospel was the first Gospel to be written, and that Luke's Gospel was also written in Greek by an anonymous author, and substantially based on an incomplete copy of Mark, with some additional input from some other sources. The "Missing Block" in Luke's copy of Mark's Gospel results in some important omissions in Luke's account. The main secondary source was the hypothetical sayings document now called 'Q' (Quelle), which was also used by Matthew. A selection of some of the differences between Luke and the other New Testament gospels follows.

The Nativity
Luke's story of the birth of Jesus differs dramatically and irreconcilably from that in Matthew, the only other version we have. Briefly: Matthew seems to have Bethlehem as the home town of Mary and Joseph. The fled to Egypt to escape from King Herod the Great, returning after his death but turned aside to travel to Galilee and find a new home in Nazareth. Luke says that Nazareth was the home town of Mary and Joseph, and that they left the town to go to Bethlehem for a census, returning peacefully to Nazareth shortly after the birth of Jesus. Historians have long puzzled over the supposed census because they have been unable to find any record of a Roman census during the reign of King Herod the Great, nor would it have made sense for a person to travel to the town of their birth for any such census. Both Matthewand Luke have genealogies of Joseph, but they are also irreconcilably different, as well as being significantly different from the Old Testament genealogies they seek to follow.

Lazarus
Only Luke and John tell of the sisters Mary and Martha, and of Lazarus. In Luke, Lazareth is in a parable about his hypothetic death, told by Jesus. In John, Lazareth is the brother of Mary and Martha, and actually dies, but is resurrected by Jesus.

The Passion of Jesus
Only Luke says that Pilate gave the responsibilty of trying Jesus to Herod, because Jesus was from Galilee. This is a quite different account to that in the other gospels.

On the cross, Mark says that Jesus said, "My God, My God! Why hast thou forsaken me?" and died soon afterwards. Johnhas Jesus command "the disciple whom Jesus loved" to look after his mother, whereas there is no disciple at the cross in Luke or any other gospel. Luke says that Jesus talked to the two criminals who were crucified with him; then when he was about to die, he said, "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit."

The Resurrection of Jesus

All the gospels have quite different accounts of the resurrection of Jesus. Mark's Gospel has the women arriving to find the stone moved from the tomb and a young man inside, who told them that Jesus had risen. The women fled in terror, telling no one.

Matthew's Gospel reports an earthquake that rolled away the stone. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary saw the angel who caused the earthquake sitting on the stone. The women saw Jesus later while on the way to tell the disciples of their experience. Finally, the eleven disciples went to a mountain in Galilee and saw Jesus.

In Luke's Gospel, the stone had already been moved when a group of women arrived, but there is no mention of an earthquake. This time, two men appeared to the women in shining garments, apparently angels. Later, Jesus appeared to two men, Cleopas and (presumably) Peter, but they did not recognise him, even after conversing with him, inviting him home, and eating dinner with him. They only assumed that he was Jesus based on his words and behaviour, but then he vanished out of their sight. At his next appearance, Jesus went to some lengths to assure them that he really was Jesus, showing the disciples his wounds, and finally being drawn up into heaven on the evening following his resurrection. All this happened in and near Jerusalem, not in Galilee. And only Luke tells of Jesus ascending bodily to heaven, a theme repeated in Acts of the Apostles, by the same author, although after a further forty days.

In John's Gospel, only Mary Magdalene went to the sepulchre and saw the stone moved. Then came 'the disciple whom Jesus loved' and Peter, who went in and saw only the linen clothes and the napkin. Next 'the disciple whom Jesus loved' went in, saw and believed. Only after they left did Mary see two angels in the sepulchre. Mary afterwards saw Jesus standing and knew not that it was Jesus, supposing that he was the gardener. The next two appearances are quite similar to a single appearance in Luke's Gospel. Finally, Jesus appeared to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberius.

Conclusion
More than in any other Gospel, Luke had Jesus show compassion for the poor. Matthew and Mark have Jesus tell his followers to love their neighbours, but Luke has Jesus tell his followers to love their enemies. On the other hand, John has Jesus tell his followers to love one another, so that others would know that they were his followers - overt displays of affection for other Christians was to be a sign to strangers that you are a Christian.

For convenience, we call the (anonymous) author of Luke's Gospel, 'Luke'. However, the attribution to Luke, physician and companion of Paul, was only made later in the second century and is unlikely to be correct. We do not know who really wrote Luke's Gospel.
