DIPG is Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma. This rare tumor of the brainstem typically occurs in children between the ages of 4 and 9, although it can occur in younger children, older children, and rarely in adults. Children in the "typical" age range have a very poor prognosis, typically surviving 9 months to 18 months after diagnosis. There is no cure. Treatment usually includes a six week course of radiation. No other therapy has been proven effective, although there have been numerous clinical trials. After radiation, many children experience a "honeymoon" period of between 3 and 9 months, with significant reduction and sometimes complete absence of symptoms. Usually tumor growth begins again after that time, and the children die within months.
There are no precise statistics on the incidence of DIPG. The most commonly cited statistic is an incidence of about 200 cases per year in the United States.
approximately 200-300 children are diagnosed with a DIPG in the US every year. Very poor prognosis with an average survival time of approx 9 months from diagnosis.
A DIPG is a tumor located in the pons (middle of brain stem) and very aggressive. There's a lot of support for this type of tumor on the net. God Bless!
