The smoke emanating from the kitchen was dissuading me from entering.
Why are you dissuading me from seeing her again?
It is in your best interest that I am dissuading you.
Dissuade is one verb of dissuasion.Other verbs are dissuades, dissuading and dissuaded.
The reverse action of beckoning (summoning) is dismissing(sending away). The opposite of beckoning (calling toward you) would be warning away, or dissuading.
The antonym for "inculcate," which means to instill an idea or habit through persistent instruction, is "dissuade." While inculcating involves promoting and reinforcing beliefs or behaviors, dissuading focuses on persuading someone not to adopt a particular idea or action. Other possible antonyms could include "neglect" or "discourage."
The opposite of "prodded" is "reassured" or "dissuaded," as prodding implies encouraging or urging someone to take action, while reassuring or dissuading suggests calming or persuading someone not to act. If someone is prodded, they are being nudged or pushed toward a decision or action; the opposite would involve creating a sense of comfort or discouragement regarding that action.
Slaves who showed a tendency to escape were branded as a means of identifying them. This contributor has seen a slave identification tag, much like a dog tag, used in the United States in the 1800's, but such a tag could more easily be discarded by an escaped slave, whereas the brand was permanent. Also, as the branding hurt immensely, it was probably effective in dissuading escapes and other transgressions.
well first of all, girls love a guy that can dance ;] and although you may be worried that your classmates will make sun of you, do what makes you happy. who cares what everyone else thinks? you're trying to better yourself and if you wanna tap, go ahead and tap. you have alot of guts that most guys don't have. =] i wish you the best!Question Poster's Response: I haven't necessarily started learning yet, out of fear (hence the reason I ask the question here). Also, it's not just my classmates I'm scared of - my parents are pretty much fully intent of dissuading me too (with the statement that I would be the only male in the class). Quite honestly, if I was the only male, that would only add to the mockery and prove them right - and that is pretty much what is dissuading me completely. Anyway, Thank you for the advice and motivation.
By teaching students incorrect "facts", giving their opinion as "fact", dissuading young bright minds who may otherwise have become great scientists from doing so, and by crushing the creative and innovative thinking that is essential for improvement in any field from the minds of their charges. Please be aware that teachers far more often further science than they hinder it, as the majority of teachers are competent, honorable individuals who do just the opposite of the possibilities listed above.
Tourism can be significantly impacted by crime, as safety concerns deter potential visitors from traveling to destinations perceived as dangerous. High crime rates can lead to negative publicity and affect a destination's reputation, further dissuading tourists. Additionally, incidents of crime against tourists can result in increased security measures, which may affect the overall experience and attractiveness of the location. Ultimately, a decline in tourism can harm local economies that rely on visitor spending.
The purpose of joint operations in this context is to safeguard national interests by employing a proactive approach to deterrence. This involves coordinating military and diplomatic efforts to prevent conflicts before they arise, thereby reducing the likelihood of threats to U.S. vital interests. By demonstrating military readiness and conducting exercises with allies, joint operations can signal strength and resolve to potential adversaries, effectively dissuading aggression before it escalates.
Your question is an attempt at changing the time-line of events, and re-stating them out of the sequence in which they actually occurred. (1) You committed the offense (2) The victim reported it (3) You were arrested (4) At sometime after your arrest you apparently brought pressure to bear on the victim to withdraw their complaint against you. It is at this point that you apparently committed the act that 'dissuaded' the victim (Intimidation of a State's Witness) from going forward with their testimony . FACT: simply because the victim expresses the desire withdraw their complaint does NOT automatically "drop" the charges and make them 'go away.' In reality they weren't dropped, and the charge still exist because it is the STATE that is prosecuting you for the offense, and NOT the individual victim personally.
The French almost made several claims to Australia, and there is still some dispute as to whether the French in fact made the first claim to Western Australia (then New Holland) in 1772. Possible the main reason why the French didn't settle in Australia was due to the efforts of a man named Charles Robbins. The British wanted to make a formal claim upon Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) before the French claimed it, so in November 1802, Governor John King sent Charles Robbins, first mate of HMS Buffalo, to the island for the sole purpose of dissuading a French claim. French commodore Nicholas Baudin had already indicated he planned to claim and colonise Van Diemen's Land. Robbins met Baudin in Van Diemen's Land and successfully persuaded Baudin to abandon his plans to claim the island. Shortly after this, British troops landed on King Island in Bass Strait, giving further credence to the British claim.
This is from one of the handful of comical essays written by Edgar Allen Poe -- I believe during his time as a news writer -- entitled "Diddling". He opens with this latin phrase which loosely translates to either "As a dog to skin [flesh] never to be frightened by [the] oil" or even more loosely "as a dog with [a piece of] greasy flesh is never frightened." I did some more research and found that this is a direct quote from the Roman poet Horace and his Second Book of Satires, "Sermonum Q. Horati Flacci Liber Secondus" There are a couple of potential meanings that I took from it: it essentially means that a dog, having the primal instinct/urge to eat flesh for sustinence, isn't dissuaded by the superficial uncleanliness of the oily skin and fur. Another meaning I believe I've read before is that a dog, gnawing at its own skin to allieviate the itchiness of fleas won't let the [again, superficial] oil of its fur get in the way. In other words, the truly motivated won't let superficial or trival obstacles get in the way of reaching their goals. This is also aligns well with the alternate translation, which likewise speaks to the difficulty of dissuading or distracting someone with intent focus.
