Detergents (liquid soap) is rubbed into the feathers and then gently rinsed away. The bird's body may be wrapped in cloth to prevent the oiled bird preening and so swallowing the oil - crude oil is very corrosive. Once clean of oil, the bird has to be kept and fed until the natural oils have been put back into the plumage, and it is strong enough to be returned to the wild. Only slightly oiled birds, caught early, have any real chance of survival.

∙ 8y agoMost oily birds should be humanely euthanized. Capturing and cleaning is traumatic for the animal. Keeping and feeding the birds after cleaning to allow them to recover makes them dependant on humans and unable to return to the wild.Pictures of oiled birds being killed are not as popular with environmental activists and so this process is often avoided for the cleaning and recovery attempts.
