The New Testament makes a number of references to "this world"... one of which is:

"...if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the Light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the Image of God, should shine unto them." (II Cor.4:3-4)

The word translated "world" here is "aion"... or "age." NOT THE PHYSICAL PLANET EARTH, but more of a matter of a "time frame."

That is... this world's god is "its god for the time being."

The study of The Bible reveals a number of story threads... one of which is the evidence that God has a "7000-year plan" for mankind that shall conclude with what it calls "the Last Great Day" -- or "Judgment Day" -- when the Righteous Justice of God shall be meted out and served against all lawlessness. When everyone will be given a "reward" in "payment" or "wages" for the "works" they have done [good or evil] in their life:

"He that is just, let him be just still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is Righteous, let him be Righteous still: and he that is Holy, let him be Holy still. And, behold, I come quicklyl and My reward is with Me, to give every man according as his work shall be." (Rev.22:11-12)

Therefore... the ultimate wisdom, witness and warning God's Word imparts to mankind is:

"Let us hear the conclusion of the matter [the matter of all the distractions and vanities man pursues in his life that keeps his heart and mind off of his Creator]: FEAR GOD, and KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into Judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good or whether it be evil." (Eccle.12:13-14)

The Bible also reveals that "this world" is influenced by a "spiritual realm" that men can't see, but that affects him, nonetheless.

"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." (Eph.6:12)

With that storyline is another thread that reveals an undisclosed number of angels led by "the Great Dragon" ["...that old Serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world..." - Rev.12:9] whom God created in the beginning, and who turned on Him and attempted to depose Him and His Authority in the universe, with the intent of ruling it themselves. But these "fallen" angels [as some men call them, probably because the Bible reveals that they were cast onto earth] and restrained here "until the time" when they shall -- STAND TRIAL ON JUDGMENT DAY TO RECEIVE THEIR REWARD, also.

"For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell [tartarus or tartaroo: a spiritual condition of restraint], and delivered them into chains of darkness, TO BE RESERVED UNTO JUDGMENT..." (II Peter 2:4).

"And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, He hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness UNTO THE JUDGMENT OF THE GREAT DAY." (Jude 1:6)

"Do ye not know that the saints shall Judge the world?... Know ye not that WE SHALL JUDGE ANGELS?" (I Cor.6:2-3)

"...the Ancient of Days came, and JUDGMENT WAS GIVEN UNTO THE SAINTS of the Most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the Kingdom." (Dan.7:22)

The point of all this is that the Bible reveals that the "limited time frame" [6000 years... or six "thousand-year days" - II Peter 3:8] that God gave to man to rule on earth [mankind's six-thousand year work-week] is coming to an end. With Christ's prophesied "thousand-year rule on earth" finishing out "the week": as the Lord's Sabbath Day of rest -- when man's works of sin [and the influence upon men by the angels restrained on earth] will no longer be allowed.

We're told in God's Word, the Bible... that the world that's coming [the New Earth that follows Judgment Day] will NOT be influenced by demons or their leader, Satan the Devil.

"For unto the angels hath He NOT put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak." (Heb.2:5)

Which means that, for the time being... "this world"... this "age"... this 6000 year "time frame" that man has been allotted to rule on earth IS IN SUBJECTION TO ANGELS!

And it is THEY who are the gods of this world. With Satan the Devil their leader.

It was Satan [that old Serpent - Rev.12:9] in the Garden of Eden who deceived the man and woman into obeying [and worshiping] him, instead of heeding the voice of their Creator ["Thou shalt have no other gods before Me"]. He appealed to their selfish human nature to "rebel against authority." And they took the bait and did just that.

Adam and Eve GAVE AWAY THEIR SOVEREIGN RULE over the earth to "restrained" Satan and his angels... and mankind has been worshiping them [mostly] in ignorance ever since.

Satan is "the god of this world." Until such "time" as Jesus returns to earth and removes him as its god. But, not before the gods of this earth influence man one last time to gather together to fight against Christ's return:

"...I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the Dragon, and out of the mouth of the Beast, and out of the mouth of the False Prophet. For they are the spirits of devils [demons], working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the WHOLE WORLD, to gather them to the battle of that Great Day of God Almighty... and he [should be THEY; the three demons] gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon." (Rev.16:13-16)

There are MANY GODS in this world [age]... on this dying misguided, misruled planet earth. The first two people created met the leader of these gods in the beginning and PUT THEMSELVES[and their children] IN SUBJECTION TO THEM.

The "gods of this earth" have been mentoring and teaching mankind the wicked lessons of the depths of sin... the "Bottomless Pit." Mankind must learn and experience these lessons for the sake of "Righteous Character" development -- that he might learn to trust in his Creator... to choose the good and reject the evil.

Jesus Christ and His Father, however, have been working during this same time frame to rectify the present situation. It began with the breaking of the bondage that this world's god holds over deceived man through the "death and resurrection" of man's Creator, Jesus Christ [John 1:3]. And their labours are all leading up to the Last Great Day -- Judgment Day -- when all of this world's gods will be removed... God's creation will be saved... and the New Earth's God will be the innumerable Family of God, Living together as One.

"...Behold, the Tabernacle of God is with men... and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God... He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and HE SHALL BE MY SON." (Rev.21:3-7)

Until that "time"... this earth is being held in subjection to many gods.

There is no consensus that science has been able to make concerning the existence of any god or God by any definition that requires a consciousness (as opposed to "energy" or "chance"). If individuals wish to believe that there is are gods or that there is a God, they are more than welcome to believe that, but there is no confirmation for their belief.
