An endoscopic examination is when a tube is inserted in the mouth or nose. From there, it's got a camera on the end that is used to look at various things throughout the digestive tract.

Endoscopy is a diagnostic or therapeutic procedure using a flexible camera called the endoscope. This is done under light sedation, and various types of endoscopy is available depending upon the area examined. Thus it will be called Bronchoscopy or laryngoscopy if the throat nose or lungs are examined, Gastroscopy if the gullet and stomach is examined, sigmoidoscopy if the lower large bowels is examined, colonoscopy for examination of the whole colon, hysteroscopy for examination of the uterus, cystourethroscopy for examination of the urethra and bladder, mediastinoscopy and thoracoscopy if the chest is examined. It can be combined with therapeutic procedures like banding or injection of oesophageal varices, biopsy and polypectomy, resection of bladder tumour and prostate.
