Provide electricity for all sorts of purposes including your computer, keep us warm in winter and cool in summer, transport us wherever we want by car, train, or plane. That seems quite a list to me.
Energy is able to do work. That's the simple physics answer to the simple question. Energy can appear in a number of forms. Thermal energy (like heat), mechanical energy (like sound or the motion of a mass), electromagnetic energy (like light or radio waves), and chemical energy (like a battery or a plastique explosive) are a few of them. And each of these is able to do work, and can "make things happen" for us. We can move things mechanically, or generate electricity, or heat things up, just to name a few of the applications.
