Espadrilles are sandals that can be either flat or high-heeled. The upper part of the most comfortable sandals, over the upper part of the foot, tends to be made of canvas or cotton. The sole tends to be made of rope or rubber. Espadrille is the French word for the sandal style that passed into France by way of the Pyrenees. For the French word tracks back to the Catalan espart, for a Mediterranean grass that's used in rope-making. For Catalonian shoemakers draw upon a sandalmaking tradition that goes back to the 14th century.

What is the difference between the espadrille and the wedge?

Wedges are a type of shoe where the heel extends from the back of the shoe to the ball of the shoe, in the shape of a wedge. Espadrilles are a type of shoe where the wedge is covered with a woven rope braiding. While many of the most common espadrilles on the market also happen to be wedges, not all espadrilles are wedges. The are many the original espadrilles were flat, and that is still a popular choice. These days you can get espadrilles that are flat, wedges or have a regular heel too. On the other hand wedges are the type of shoes, and the wedge can be made of any sturdy, lightweight material, the most common being cork and wood.
