Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD)

Esophago - esophagus (organ that connects the mouth to the stomach.

Gastro - stomach

Duodeno - Duodenum - first section of the small intestines.

Oscopy - to scope or visualize

This is also known as an EGD. It is a invasive procedure in which a physician places a scope (tube with camera, tubes for manipulation, and irrigation outlet) down the throat and into the stomach and the intestines. It allows the physician to visualize the anatomy on the inside via a monitor. The physician may take pictures, manipulate the anatomy, cut, cauterize, take biopsies, and irrigate the area. It is used to help treat and diagnose problems.
