How do you explain that gravity that pulls things to the center of an object?

Exergy and Energy. When the sign of potential energy is negative this is called exergy and indicates that energy comes out, thus exergy. This is the case when opposite charges are involved, the potential energy is negative and this configuration emits energy. When the charges are the same the sign is positive and energy is absorbed in this configuration.Newton discovered that gravity is exergy, emits energy as the masses attract each other. Taking the center at one of the masses, this accounts for the center seeking behavior of gravity.

Can joules ever be negative?

Yes. A rock falling from a height has negative joules. When a displacement is in the same direction as the force the work is negative and represents exergy, energy out.I notice that the "exergy" is in red indicating it is not a word recognized by the system. This is a fundamental question in physics. Energy is energy into a system and is positive, exergy is energy coming out of the system and is negative. Exergy is like explosion and energy is like implosion. Exercise is energy coming out of the body system.

Force times the distance traveled in the direction of that force is referred to as what?

Exergy! Today's science calls this energy, this is wrong it is Exergy NOT Energy. This is a fundamental point of science and math. This is the difference between good math and bad math, Hamilton's Vectors and the vectors used in today's science. Bad math makes bad science. The proper analysis which the math provided is "if you drop a ball under gravity , you get energy out or exergy. If you lift a ball under gravity you put energy in." This should be obvious to a child, but it is not the rule for physicists even today. There is a history behind this wrong view. Maxwell and the scientists wanted to call this energy, which is work-in or energy, however Hamilton's vectors which Maxwell was using called it work-out or exergy. The physicists had defined it as work-in or energy and wanted it to be positive. The Physicists prevailed and J Willard Gibbs and Oliver Heaviside invented a new vector math called Vector Analysis, where the rule is I^2= +1. This rule is in use today and hampers math and physics. It is mathematically and physically defective. Vector Analysis is mathematically non-associative meaning A(BC) does not equal (AB)C. Hamilton's vectors are associative and A(BC)= (AB)C! It is inconceivable that physics uses defective math but it does. You cannot have good physics with bad math.

How energy differ from work energy?

Energy denotes work in (en-ergy). Work can be energy or exergy ( work out).

What occurs when force is applied over a certain distance and motion is in the same direction as the force?

There is exergy. Energy is given out by the motion.

This is a reaction that gives out energy?

Exotherm is a reaction that gives out energy . Exergy is the proper name for giving out energy ala exercise and exert, the key syllable is 'ex' for 'out'.
