The most important mechanical weathering process?
Alternating wetting and drying, causing continuous heating and
cooling of rock surfaces, due to change in weather conditions by
rainfall and sunshine periods, which leads to uneven expansion
within rock layers. This eventually results in cracking and peeling
off of rock surfaces (exfolliation).
