A fire alarm (often referred to a smoke alarm or a smoke detector) is an early warning device that wakes up occupants and to get them to evacuate them out of a building or a house, before the smoke from the fire chokes the occupants from the house or building. The smoke alarm is supposed to emit a loud 85db alarm that will alert you and your family.

For more information, read the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 72 National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code Handbook that will tell you the common code requirements for residential smoke detectors and/or fire alarm systems.
