It's a pretty cut-and-dry question. When you enlist into the US Army, you're automatically signed up for the Montgomery GI Bill (unless you choose to decline it). For the next 12 months after signing up for the GI Bill, $100 is removed from each month's wages. So long as you're still paying off your GI Bill, you are a first year soldier, although terms more commonly used are "cherry" and "FNG".
