Lámpara. This is the word for lamp. So, you'll need to say lámpara de pilas (battery-operated lamp) to distinguish it from the one hanging above your dining room table. About two weeks after arriving in the US, though, Mexicans stop saying pilas for batteries and start saying baterías. So, you can say lámpara de baterías, too, although Spaniards will cringe. "Linterna" is a lantern, so that won't do.
