Forensic Science is the application of methods and techniques of science to solve legal questions.

If you are trying to solve a legal question with any of the vast variety of scientific methodology, you can append 'forensic' to that science - e.g. Forensic Biology uses methods common to scientific inquiry in biology to solve questions of the identity and source of physical evidence collected from a crime scene or a victim or a suspect. Forensic Chemistry uses methods of chemical analysis to identify or characterize the chemical nature of physical evidence (is that white powder a drug, a poison, or talcum?)
