Venus and Adonis, The Rape of Lucrece, The Phoenix and the Turtle, Sonnet XVIII. All the sonnets are known only by numbers so one could as easily say Sonnet 1, Sonnet 2, Sonnet 3 and Sonnet 4. Those are certainly four of Shakespeare's poems.
Besides the thirty-odd plays and hundred and fifty-four sonnets, he also wrote three narrative poems: The Rape of Lucrece, Venus and Adonis, and The Passionate Pilgrim.
Venus and Adonis and The Rape of Lucrece of course were published under Shakespeare's name and were very popular. Other poems of note are The Phoenix and the Turtle and A Lover's Complaint.
One hundred and fifty-four sonnets were contained in the omnibus Shake-speare's Sonnets published in 1609. Thirty-six plays were in the First Folio collection of 1623, but not included in this collection was Pericles (published in 1609) and The Two Noble Kinsmen (co-written with John Fletcher and published in 1634).364
Shakespeare still rules as the king of classic love poems. His sonnets set the standard for romance and lust, even being almost four hundred years old.
John Keats's "On the Sonnet" consists of 14 lines and is structured as an Italian sonnet, which includes an octave (8 lines) followed by a sestet (6 lines). It does not consist of quatrains, which are four-line stanzas typically found in poems like William Shakespeare's sonnets.
Love, Betrayal, Women, and Mutton. (The last one was a wild guess....)
Apart from his plays and sonnets, Shakespeare wrote only three or four poems and some odd song lyrics. A couple of the poems are quite long and pretty well written and were really popular at the time, particularly one called Venus and Adonis. So why do people not know about it?1. Long poems are not really popular things to read these days. There are a lot of classic long poems: The Iliad, Beowulf, The Inferno, Paradise Lost, The Faerie Queen etc. How many has the average person read?2. And apart from never teaching long poems in schools, they would never, ever teach Venus and Adonis. Why? Because it's porn, that's why.
Many of Shakespeare's thirty-odd plays are world class. It is hard to choose between them, and some of it would be a matter of personal taste. Of the hundred and fifty-four sonnets, many of them are world-class and, again, personal preference would suggest a best. After reading them, choose your own favorite and analyse why.
there are 16 i tink.
Open a copy of Shakespeare's Sonnets. Pick a sonnet at random. Quote the first four lines. They will rhyme (the first line with the third and the second with the fourth) and will probably have the meter of iambic pentameter (ta-DUM ta-DUM ta-DUM ta-DUM ta-DUM). You want another example? Pick another sonnet and do the same thing.
Sonnet 18- Shall I Compare Thee to A Summer's Day? These four are also some of Shakespeare's most popular sonnets Sonnet 029 - When in disgrace with fortune Sonnet 116 - Let me not to the marriage of true minds Sonnet 126 - O thou my lovely boy Sonnet 130 - My Mistress' eyes
Shakespeare had three children with his wife, Anne Hathaway Shakespeare. If he had a child with his mistress, the Dark Lady, then that would have been the fourth.
