Skeletal muscles are attached to bones which make up the skeleton. They are attached to the bones by tendons. The tendons are made out of tissues that run through the muscular tissue and come together at the end forming tendons. The major function of the skeletal muscles is movement. Contraction of the fibres (cells) in the skeletal muscle generates tension which is transmitted through the tendons. Pairs (or more) of muscles generating tension on the tendons will move the bone. Skeletal muscles are also used in the maintenance of posture as the muscles have to contract to keep the body up right. An other function is the by product of movement; heat. The heat produced during the contraction of muscles, is an important homeostatic mechanism as it helps to maintain the body's core temperature.
