The usual ironing board (still used today) is a long, narrow, padded board on folding legs that allowed the board to be raised or lowered. Once raised (usually to waist height), clothes can be laid out individually on the board and the creases remover from the clothes with a flat iron heated on the kitchen fire grate. A tea towel or other cloth could be placed over the clothes and ironed on top to prevent singing from the hot iron. If steam was needed the tea towel could be dampened a little. There were usually two flat irons. While one was being used and cooling down, the second one was heating up on the fire.
Nowadays, with electrical steam irons, etc, ironing clothes is less of a chore.

It is called an IRONING board for a very good reason ... it is a board that you iron clothes on.
Elijah McCoy invented the ironing board. Sarah Boone patented an improvement to the ironing board in 1887.

If properly cared for, a good ironing board should last a lifetime. I am 51 and my mom still has the same ironing board she had when I was a child. She has changed the cover many times but it's the same board.

An ironing board is used in the home on which to iron clothes with a hot (steam) iron to remove creases in the fabric. The ironing board is usually a long, padded board that is on a folding tubular metal frame that allows the ironing board's surface to be raised or lowered to a comfortable working height. When not in use it can be folded and put away until it is next needed.
