The primary function of mitochondria in any eukaryote is to produce ATP. ATP stands for adenosine triphosphate, and is the primary energy molecule in the cell. Other functions that the mitochondria play an important role in are signaling, cellular differentiation, and cellular growth and death. They are so important, that there are around 1 to 2 thousand mitochondria in a single cell!

The Mitochondria is a membraneous organelle in which aerobic cellular respiration produces the energy carrier ATP. It basically provides energy for the cell and its functions. The Mitochondria also have an inner fluid that is called the Matrix. It contains DNA, ribosomes, and enzymes which break down carbohydrate products, releasing energy that is used for ATP production.

Note: ATP is just a fancy term used for energy
