I'm definitely no mechanic but, i have a 1979 ford f100 with the original 302 in it and it doesn't have points.
Montgomery ward
On a ( 1978 ) Ford 302 cubic inch V8 engine : It has Electronic Ignition , so there are no points
i do believe you can. but,,,,,,, you have to check the length of the shaft in comparesson to the other. make sure the cam gear is correct. and see if the 1985 distributor is electic module or points , or just electric.
if you googlehow to set points on distributer the first answer is correct, with the cam lobe on the shaft opening the points it should open to 17 thousands
All Ford 302 distibutors are interchangable. The differences will be, are they points or electronic ignition. Other differences are year specific in the amount of vacuum advance built into the diaphram. Some of these are adjustable. Unfortunate exception to the rule, I have two 1979 Lincoln Versailles with 302's, the variable venturii model distributor has 1.500 locating diameters, the carb model distributor has 1.562 diameters. Both are electric pickups but definetly not interchangeable.
The firing order on the Ford 302 has not changed and is still 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. The firing order on the Ford 302 HO however has been changed to 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 which is the same as the 351.
Yes. Even though these are different years. The emissions may be different . These can be changed over.
You look under the distributor cap.
