Science doesn't know. Science has theories but since we haven't been able to reproduce creation in the laboratory, they remain theories. Ideas about how the universe came into being have changed considerably in my lifetime. The term "Big Bang" which is currently in favour, was originally coined by Professor Fred Hoyles to ridicule the idea of the universe coming into existence all in one go. (By the way - it wasn't big, it was infinitesimally small and there was no bang. You would have to stand outside of the expanding universe to observe a bang and there was no outside).

Around 2,200 years ago, a Hebrew scholar wrote a short treatise on how the world came into existence, the relationship between God and man, and why we need a day off every week. This came to be annexed to the beginning of the Book of Genesis in the Koine Greek translation we know as the Septuagint and became part of the Christian Bible. It was never intended to be a literal account and only ultra-orthodox Jews and some American Calvinist sects believe it to be so. The overwhelming majority of religious people, Christian and otherwise, are quite happy to go along with the current scientific account of the origins of the universe - knowing that like London buses, there'll be another one along soon.

In the broadest sense, this belief is a belief in creation. When used to explain either of the creation accounts in the Book of Genesis, this is call special creation.A specific theological position that insists that a particular interpretation of the biblical creation accounts is literally true, generally to the exclusion of scientific theory, is called creationism. Because there are several widespread interpretations of the biblical creation accounts, they are generally grouped under either of two umbrella headings - 'Old Earth' creationism and 'Young Earth' creationism. The adherents of any one form of creationism will usually assert that other forms of creationism are false. For more information, please visit: http://christianity.answers.com/theology/the-story-of-creation
