Glossopteris was a spore bearing 'seed fern' and in life was restricted to high latitudes surrounding Antarctica. It went extinct in the great Permian extinction. It is an important index fossil. As such it forms part of the early record for continental drift.

It is a tongue shaped leaf and the name comes from the Greek glossa for tongue.
