There are quite a few things that will make a boat move:

- an ocean current or a river going downstream can be used to move a boat if it is going in the direction you want.

- poling in shallow water by sticking a long pole down and pushing against the bottom.

- a hand held oar or paddle that pushes against the water.

- wind pressure against a sail.

- a motor driven propeller creating a pressure difference in the water.

- a jet drive ejecting a water jet behind a jetboat, causing an equal forward movement mass for mass. (Jetboats eject water into the air. Underwater jetcraft eject into the water)

- a steam engine driven paddle wheel, with its lower blades below the water providing thrust.

- air boats or fan boats, pushed by a large above-water propellor.

- towing from a tow path by pulling the boat along by a rope, using human, animal or motor power.

- others include water bikes, peddle boats
